Ionian Catholic Spirituality
-
My spirituality, which I call Ionian Catholicism, is influenced by Celtic Catholic traditions and a set of three ecumenical communities that are the legacy of Irish monks founding abbeys on the Isles of Iona, Scotland, and Lindesfarne, Northern England.
The hallmarks of Ionian Catholic spirituality are interconnectedness, the sacramentality of the natural world, hospitality and availability, and mercy.
Catholic influences enrich my spirituality through weekly Mass and a broad, diverse, and vibrant spiritual tradition.
Ionian Catholicism embodies a liminal Christianity. The term "liminal," derived from the Latin "limen" (meaning threshold), evokes doorways, blurred boundaries, and in-between spaces. In Celtic tradition, this concept reflects the notion of thin places—sacred sites where the veil between the divine and human realms is permeable, allowing one reality to blend into another.
Like a shoreline blending sand and sea, Celtic Christianity navigates the space between orthodox and unconventional practices. It embraces Christian identity while remaining open to mystical and nature-infused spirituality. This liminal path is comfortable with ambiguity and challenges rigid orthodoxies and unmerited certainties.
